if you have an AVI file and try to open it and it doesnt open with windows media player, you get a box where you can use 'the web' find the program to open the file or choose from a list to open the file with. How do I open it? with what program? or what do i need to download in order view this avi and mwv files?

If that program won`t play it, nothing will.

Oh, and stop watching that stuff, or you`ll go blind :p

Instead of choosing 'the web'....just click 'Browse' and find Windows Media Player.

VLC works too though...for pretty much everything.

Usually it means you'll need a codec like DivX or Xvid.

VLC does everything wonderfully minus FLV files.

Old thread, I know....but I found a pretty good program to deal with this re-occuring problem, and I thought I'd let people know about.

AVI ReComp. Really easy to use, pretty much recompresses any file to an .avi file with all the right codecs. VLC is easy if you just want to watch the file, but I don't have a program that can covert those files into MPG4s that can go onto my iPod....and if you use the Media Center on the xBox 360 then it only plays regular .avi files with all the right codecs. So if you ever run into a codec problem...just get AVI ReComp and it'll fix it all.

Also, you can put subtitles into foreign films.
