With preseason kicking off, thought it was time to start a new thread for the new year. We'll start with a Zylstra post.

Brandon Zylstra was held out of the Minnesota Vikings pre-season game against the Broncos in Denver tonight. He was a force when he played for the Bombers; averaged over 50 yards per punt one year at age 23. I doubt we'll see him in the CFL again. One of the best.

I hate to say this since I'm such a huge NFL fan. But the NFL's new rules on hitting are going to cost it viewers this year. Week to week they will bleed audience at an alarming rate. Book it.

Their pre-season has been a disaster so far. Basically flags are getting thrown on anything beyond flag football. Its ridiculous. Unwatchable.

I hate to agree with you but yeah it's gone too far the other way now. You're better off trying to just go for the ball or push them out of bounds just about every tackle could be a penalty now.

ProFootballTalk from NBC Sports is reporting that the JJ Watt Foundation has raised and distributed $41.6 million in donations in the aftermath of hurricane Harvey devastating the Houston area one year ago. Initial goal was $200,000.

Funds have been distributed to eight organizations that have repaired over 600 homes and 420 daycare centres, provided 26 million meals , provided medicine to over ten thousand people and provided physical and mental health services. Work and services still continue.

Wondering if the Vikes or Browns give him another shot , both are short of Olinemen. Cap hit has to be close to 1 mil. though with his years of service. Still only 27 though. Certainly would help us but he might have made enough NFL money to bypass us. Always the new league too.

What a game in Green Bay tonight!!!!! Rodgers goes down with a knee injury while down 7-0 in the first, bears go up 20-0 by half time. Rodgers comes back miraculously in the 2nd half and engineers a comeback for the ages!! Packers outscore the Bears 24-3 in the second half to win 24-23. Two fun games by green and gold teams this weekend.

Hey question for you all. Ok, I’m watching more nfl this year than I ever have, but something I don’t get is the strategy on kickoffs. Why is it that it seems like over 90% of the time teams kick it right into or through the end zone rather than inside the 5 yard line. It seems like they are always content to let the receiving team take it on the 25 rather than trying to pin them deep. Field position seems pretty important with yards being so hard to gain in the nfl that this strategy doesn’t make sense to me.

The NFL passed news rules this year regarding kickoffs. Several actually. The intent was to reduce injuries. Kickoffs are considered the most dangerous play in football. Lots of kickers down there with big legs also. Even in college ball you see the ball booted right into the end zone on KO's.

With that, it almost seems like they could eliminate the kickoff altogether and just start every drive after a score on the 25. Not traditional I know, just seems like kickoffs are pretty pointless.

I was thinking this too. At the Vanderbilt game I attended in September, pretty much every kick was a touchback. In fact, I think the only returns that happened were on punts.

I get that you want to emphasize player safety, but the safety aspect needs to be compensated for by incentives/rule changes to preserve the integrity of the kicking skill - perhaps by moving the ball to the 30 or 35 after a kickoff touchback (and maintaining 25 yards for touchbacks after an INT or other wacky play).

Sunday evening though. Doesn’t really affect CFL games.
Don’t know how the CFL is doing in that same period too.

I’m a fan of both leagues so I’d also like to know who watches both leagues and how it’s changed year over year. That’s a true test of how the CFL and NFL are viewed in Canada.

And no real running game. Made Montgomery into a RB from receiver and other than Lacy in 2013 ( 2nd rd.) didn't value a true RB as a priority either as a draft pick or FA. They used to call their division "the black and blue division" because they wore other teams down. Worked for some guy named Lombardi.

Obviously Rodgers is best in the passing game but having a top notch RB that other teams D's fear and giving him the rock on a regular basis makes sense. Plus they still haven't replaced my fav, Jordy Nelson.

Raiders have three # 1's in the upcoming draft and two # 1's the following draft. Maycock played one CFL game in '81 with the Argos.

In fact, it's been demonstrated that icing the kicker doesn't work at all. It doesn't change the FG's probability either positively or negatively.

This kicker's been a statistical fluke this year, with how many times he's hit the uprights.

Everyone is talking about how he calls the plays before they happen. That’s not why I like him. Right from when he started, what has stood out is his enthusiasm & love for the game - and he’s willing/able to say things that many football broadcasters can’t (or aren’t willing to) because he played & because he’s just calling a spade a spade. It’s refreshing.

For me, he’s up there with Tony Dungey, but for different reasons.

Didn't try to dial up much heat on Brady and got owned by the Pats offence at the end of the game. Thought the KC def. looked bagged at the end.

I think Romo is a really good color guy. And by the way, he read defenses pretty well while he played. 65% completions over the course of his career, never once below 60%. More than 2 TDs for every INT. More than 25 TDs 7 times and more than 30 4 times. He was a very good QB on some very mediocre teams.

I hate the Patriots, but I hope they win. The Rams don't deserve to be there. Should be Brees and the Saints. As much as I bitch about reffing in the CFL, I don't know that I've seen a non-call THAT bad in either league ever. And it cost one team a trip to the Super Bowl. Probably one of the worst Superbowls ever. Game was a snoozer and the halftime show a dud.

My favourite part of this year’s Super Bowl was Robert Kraft wearing the diamond CHAMPIONSHIPS necklace given to him by Meek Mill.

Second favourite was Brady & Edelman having a lightsaber fight at Disney World.

Who knew the Patriots (other than Gronk) could have fun?!?

haha, thankfully my little dude had a hockey game at the same time, so I tuned in around the start of the 4th and missed the half time show. Part of me wants to try and find it so I can see how much of a disaster it actually was. Sure haven't heard anything good about it from ANYONE. :)

Maroon 5 & Travis Scott were horrible. Big Boi was awesome, but he was maybe 90 seconds, if even.

Why is a billionaire like Robert Kraft going to a strip mall massage parlour? I assumed that high class escorts would be more up his alley. Sex trafficking ring aside - which is horrible - I just can’t get my head around that. He is a public figure in a position of leadership. You have to care about where you are seen & what you are seen doing.

This tweet from a NBC reporter in Boston:
“Martin County Sheriff says the women involved in human trafficking ring were given no days off. They averaged about 1,500 men a year. He says their hygiene was “minimal” at best @NBC10Boston”

Sometimes real life sucks.

...and will US govt blame the women & deport them? Ugh )

You're probably too young to remember the disaster that was Dennis Miller providing commentary on Monday Night Football. With the intro of the XFL way back, somebody on ABC thought it would be a good idea to throw a hack comedian who knew some about football on the broadcasts. It wasn't.

Interesting move. O and Dlines rely on quick hands and feet as well as varied pass rush moves, its not all about power. I bet they excel at their positions.

NFL today announced that both Off. & Def. pass interference calls will be challengeable. Coaches will now have the opportunity
to challenge pass interference calls or non-calls outside of two minutes of each half. The booth will automatically review all close call inside of two minutes.

Packer great Jordy Nelson retired today after eleven NFL seasons, ten with the Pack. A sure Packer Hall of Famer. Missed the 2015 season with a knee injury and came back
in 2016 with 98 receptions, 1257 yds and a league high 14 TD's. Retires as the 5th Packer all time leading receiver.

Chicago Sun Times has taken a stab at projecting the Bears 2019 roster. Saying that the Bears will keep five outside LB's.

Khalil Mack, Leonard Floyd and Aaron Lynch are considered in and Matt Betts , plus three others are considered on the bubble.

Betts was our # 1 pick, 3rd overall in the 2019 draft. Was a DE at Laval , likely not considered to have the size for an NFL D line position. No mention about possible ST players though.

Thanks for that. Good read. Betts quickness bought him success in CIS ball but just wondering if not being off the los a yd. might be a tough adjustment being nose to nose with a big OT in the NFL. Maybe he can be used in passing situations. Is he quick enough to be an NFL LB or gets to play ST's.

As you said Hicks & Mack are the best to learn from. Hicks sure has had a good career for a guy that played at U. Regina.
