You can forget about Roustabouts. The new Northern League franchise will be called the Cracker Cats.

are you joking?

if you aren't, there is a tie to the oilfield.
catalytic crackers or aka hydrocrackers, in simple terms, are equipment used in refineries....but that is an absolutely terrible name.

Just when you thought Roustabouts was as bad as it got.........

I can think of one that's better right off the hop:

Edmonton Deuces ( tribute to John Ducey)

How about the Edmonton 99ers?

Nahh, he's got a freeway and a statue already. John Ducey was the father of baseball in Edm. A tribute to him would have been very nice considering they took his ballpark away from him.

The Goldeyes and the Cracker Cats... and Gary, Indiana already has the Railcats... sigh.

Mel Kowalchuk usually gets things right but not this time. Nobody seems to like the nickname because it's ridiculous and lame. They have "Name the Team" contests to avoid this kind of error.

Cracker cats sounds like the nickname for a city that houses a bunch of redneck pimps...

I don't mind the name, actually...kind of novel, IMO. I saw the logo(s) on the news tonight, and they weren't half bad, I've definitely seen worse.

As time passes, it'll probably be shortened to just 'Cats or C-Cats in casual conversation anyways. Not my first choice for a name, but I can work with it.

or Crackers........:D

...the name sucks even more now than when I first heard it. As someone else mentioned, the Northern League already has a team with a nonsensical feline name (the Gary Southshore Railcats). Strike 1! There's too many ways to alter the name into something stupid/insulting (Crapper Cats, Crackerjacks, Crackers, Cracked Bats, Crappy Cats, Crappy Stats, etc., etc., etc.). Strike 2! The tie-in to the oilpatch is so weak and such a reach that it's an insult to everyone's intelligence. Strike 3, YER OUT!!! Please go back to the drawing board...

the logo is nice, but the name sucks. there are many better names that could tie in the oil field than "Cracker".

Job well done by Kowalchukwell, we're talking about how lame and embarrassing it is.....they could have done the same thing by calling the team the Horny Derrick Dogs......

Derrick Dogs would have been 10x better!

Wildcatters would be obvious although the name is maybe owned by the ECHL's Texas Wildcatters. Oil rigs have blow-out preventers a.k.a. B.O.P.s so how about the BOP-Cats? HR hitters are known as "big boppers" and the pitchers should be aiming to prevent blowouts. They wouldn't even need to change the logo pic. It's not great but at least it gets "Cracker" out of the name.

Cracker sounds like they are wearing white hoods out there or somethin.

I don't mind the name at all.

From a marketing perspective, this is a great name. The die-hard baseball fans (about 3000) will come every game, no matter what the name.

Having gone to many Trappers games myself, the large majority of the fans are families with children....the kids will like the logo, the name, and the mascot......the kids are the target market, and the name reflects that.

All I know Sandy is that if I'm an up and coming young black ballplayer, I'm not going to be too eager to sign with a team called the Crackers. Kowalchuk and Al Coates citing the old Atlanta Crackers (longtime Yankee AAA powerhouse) is not exactly a ringing endorsement either.

Fair point...although Mel did explain that the name has nothing to do with racism.

I'm sure the players will understand.
