Hot Canad Inns proposes new stadium for the Bombers

Domed But as far as domes go it looks pretty nice. I think I could come around to the dome, even though I believe football should be played outside. But I guess you gotta give and take. Seating capacity apparently around 30k, but that is open for negotiation, and I think it would be increased.

Domed stadium would cost $265 million

    Updated at 1:32 PM

A domed football stadium for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the Public Markets in St. Boniface would cost $265 million — roughly half of a $520- million destination and retail project proposed by the Canad Inns hotel chain.

Canad Inns president and CEO Leo Ledohowski went public with his plans for the former Canada Packers site today, confirming previously reported plans for a four-star hotel and waterpark and retail stores.

Ledohowski attached a $50-million price tag to the hotel/waterpark and $150 million to the retail development.

But he also unveiled a new wrinkle: A $55-million redevelopment of the existing site of Canad Inns Stadium in Polo Park, which in turn would help finance the new football venue in St. Boniface.

Ledohowski hopes this redevelopment, dubbed Blue Bomber Plaza, would generate $7 million a year in “excess profit” and projects it will contribute $90 million toward the cost of building the new stadium — as long as the City of Winnipeg provides a 15-year tax abatement for the Polo Park redevelopment.

The Canad Inns plan is one of two stadium proposals in front of the Winnipeg football Club’s board of directors. David Asper, executive vice-president of media giant CanWest Global, wants to build a $145 million, partly enclosed football stadium/retail complex on the existing Canad Inns Stadium site and assume ownership of the football club.

The Canad Inns proposal would see the team remain community owned. But it calls for the same injection of public funds — $40 million each from the federal and provincial government — as the Asper proposal.

Ledohowski said he is seeking no public funds for the private components of the St. Boniface development.

Bank financing would cover some short-term construction costs, with revenue from the Blue Bomber Plaza and the new domed stadium itself paying back the loan in the long run.

The Winnipeg Football Club is expected to make a choice between the Asper or Canad Inns proposals within months.

Be great to see a new stadium in the CFL. Hopefully they could incorporate a way to open the top part.
I hit them as hard as I could on the mouth right from the start of the game so they were thinking this was going to be a long day. Sooner or later one of us had to quit. And it wasn't going to be me.

Hopefully a new stadium might spur on some new ones in other places too. Not sure what the roof would be made out of, but in that picture it looks like it allows for natural light. I agree finding a way to open it without jacking the price way high would be ideal.

Good for Winnipeg. The only problems I'd forsee would be that the stadium cannot be expanded when the Grey Cup comes to town.

Pretty sure this model can, but Aspers cannot.

From the view that the indoor picture is looking from is the hotel I assume and there is a large open space there seats could go.

Nice looking concept. Agreed with the others that an open roof would be nice, even if it was the Dallas cowboys model of basically just the filed surface being open to the elements.

No kiddn' - the concept drawings makes it look like it can rival some European soccer stadiums. Sure is nice tho. Here's hoping it'll happen.

Make it 40,000 base seating (at minimum) with possibility for expansion for Labor Day and G.C. and you have a TOTAL winner.

Citizens of winnipeg need to get behind this project.

this is a beautiful facility but does it make sense to move forward with this type of facility when you got guys in the league making peanuts ?right now we have guys going to the arena league for an extra 10,000 a year .i think if the players don't start getting paid better you will have a really nice empty stadium

you could also argue that better facilities will bring more fans, make the league more popular, and increase revenues so that in the future, the CFL will be able to grow and increase salary cap.

I agree with Esks4ever, just the lower bowl looks like 25k (with absolutely no leg room)

This was the original toilet bowl design was it not?

I think I preferred the concept submitted by Asper....

I liked Asper's better, personally...this is still a heck of a facility, though.

The picture does look huge...IMO it's a photoshopped pic of Arizona's new stadium (seems about right). From a quick glance, the lower bowl is bigger (as many or more rows) than CW, and the upper bowl is about the same...never mind the upper parts at the far endzone. There's probably a good 65k in that place, if not more...I would assume WPG's would be a slightly smaller version of that.

you can even see the same construction workers at the bottom, and they just took the right half, and mirrored it for the left side so that they wouldn't have to edit out the construction workers on the left side. And they just lightened the roof to make it look like it's open.
