Yeah, count me as another who couldn't stand Maniac. Got through 6 or 7 episodes and finally gave in.

Working my way through season 3 of The Last Kingdom. Such a great show.

Ah well, to each their own, I guess.

Would I be cruising for a banning if I admitted to being bored by Game of Thrones?

Man, I don't know what happened to The Orville. Last year it was so fun and hilarious and this year is just so meh. They are going for these character driven shows that are just plain boring. I am almost done with it.

If you want to check out some fantastic TV doing new things, you should watch Sex Education and Russian Doll on Netflix. Both are very good.

really liked that show, makes me wonder how long cable TV is gonna last as shows like this have a HUGE advantage over anything on cable. Their hands aren't tied by censorship or commercials. Shows like The Ranch are inserting advertising right into the show with a lot of product placement, I suspect that will be the new norm.

We just cancelled our cable this week.

Netflix, Crave and the Infomir box will do wonders for you TV viewers. Saves you some money and the box gives you tons of options for sports & watching so many different TV channels.

    Good stuff!
I've said it before...if I could find a reliable way to stream CFL games (or if TSN direct was a lot cheaper), my cable would be gone. I only use it to watch football (and curling every once in a while). I find android apps like Mobdro are great for streaming a lot of stuff (especially US cable channels), but TSN, not so much. Of course I don't have crazy tech skills, so maybe it's me. The world of IPTV is a new thing for me.
My Nvidia Shield Android box I bought last year is the best investment I've made to my home entertainment world. Best streaming box ever.

Yeah, TSN direct (though better) still sucks so cable with PVR is still a necessity for my lifestyle. If they ever upgrade their apps to allow for a live DVR type functionality like Sportsnet Now, I may finally cut the cord even if I had to pay the $20/month.

At some point a company would be wise to create a live streaming bundling service getting you access to a lots of these services. Cable/Satelite does this already, but they still have to charge a lot to maintain their infrastructure for sending their signal to traditional TVs, whereas a company that just bundled the subscriptions may get you a decent price for multiple services without having to maintain the infrastructure.

    Loved Russian Doll.

Weird how the Orville got worse, and ST: Discovery seems to have gotten better. I'm not surprised that the Orville got worse...it had a gimmick in its first year (let's lovingly poke fun of Star Trek). But that doesn't last multiple seasons. If a show's going to succeed in the long run, it has to be doable with character development. So far, that's not happening.

Interesting take. The shows themselves haven't been as entertaining, but this season seems to be all about character development to set up a longer run in my opinion. New relationships are popping up. There seems to be growing tension due to the differences between the rest of the union and Moclan culture which I suspect at point will lead to a major conflict. There has been some more developments with the Krill leading to believe at some point diplomatic discussions could happen.

The challenge really has been that they are focusing too much on character development and future story arcs at the jeopardy of entertainment within an individual episode.

It was written entirely by women and it was excellent. I still have that song stuck in my head. "Gotta get up, gotta get out, gotta get home before the morning comes..."

Actually, I've kind of given up on that one as well. Watched the first episode of season 2 and haven't had the desire to watch more.

That's all fine and dandy, but the ratings are dog **** and getting worse by the episode.

It's amazing how far things have changed. I originally signed up for Netflix because they were going to be airing Arrested Development season 4. Now it's a few weeks away from new episodes, and I have no interest. The first three seasons were some of the greatest television, and I just wanted it to continue, but in the end, it should have be left undisturbed to rest in peace. Be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it.

I think the problem with these shows coming back is that they can never live up to expectations. I felt this way with The X-Files. It doesn't mean the new episodes aren't any good, but your expectations just super high after so much time away. TV wasn't as good back then and I'm not even sure the originals hold up.

Definitely not living up to high expectations. But the pace is slower, and the writing isn't as sharp (the schedules of the cast members may also be partly to blame). The originals do hold up because I binge-watched the entire series a few months ago prior to watching season 5 part 1, and the first three seasons are still great, with a notable drop into season 4, and a further drop in season 5.

Re: The TV Mega-Thread: The Truth is Out There

I think it's true that TV is much better than it used to be --- more creative, more novel, more room for trying different things rather than the standard genres. With Arrested Development you're also seeing the sequel effect...the original inspiration happened more than a decade ago, and even the same writers so much later are trying to recreate a vision, like making a photocopy. There's also no advantage of surprise and novelty for the watcher anymore. The best that can be hoped for is a faithful copy of the original, and even that won't have the impact on us than the original did, so we're mildly disappointed.

I'd ask the writers to come up with something totally new, rather than bring back the past.

For those that enjoyed the Netflix series, "The Haunting of Hill House", they will be returning with a second season - but it won't focus on the Crane family and Hill House. Director Mike Flanagan believes there that tale has wrapped up, so they've decided to adapt the Henry James horror novella, "The Turn of the Screw". The series won't be available until 2020 as director Flanagan is busy in post production on "Doctor Sleep", the Stephen King sequel to "The Shining" (due in theatres Nov 9th, 2019)

Well, after I bashed The Orville, they come out with two awesome episodes. I guess that's why it was so boring to this point because they clearly spent all their money on these two.

Bit of a shock to see Isaac betray them so suddenly and starkly. Best moment of the series so far for me.
