    Event Beer

In addition to being an Eskimo fan, I am also a homebrewer and active in the Edmonton Homebrewers Guild. A year ago, I brewed a stout that had neapolitan ice cream flavors (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry), which won a gold medal last May. Sherbrooke Liquor Store (the best beer store in the city, bar none) combined with Alley Kat to convert my 5 gallon recipe into a 16.5 hectoliter batch a few weeks ago, and as of this morning it is on the store shelves (at Sherbrooke only).

Here's a few pics of the process and final product:

Sherbrooke Liquor Store is on the northeast corner of the traffic circle on St. Albert Trail and 118 Ave (by the Domo). Doesn't look like much from outside, but when you walk into the beer cooler, you'll hear angels singing

I started homebrewing about 18 months ago, and I've brewed a new batch (23 L each) every 3 weeks since. I tend to get pretty crazy with my flavors (from a gingerbread-spiced brown ale, to a bacon porter, to a Chai dubbel, to a Hawaiian Punch wheat ale), but they've all been tasty and never last long unless I hide some away.

Monumentally easy to make wine that is good as a decent bottle of wine in the stores. (As in not the cheap stuff) (This is from wine kits.)

A bit tougher to make it from scratch but you can get some really nice stuff none the less. (I have a pear tree in my back yard and have made pear, pear/apple, pear raspberry....various combos.)

With just the wine kits though they are very easy to use and well worth it.

From what I've heard, beer and wine are fairly similar in terms of the process. Wine is a bit easier as a higher alcohol content is a given, so sanitation isn't as big an issue, but as long as you're careful, I've never had a problem with contamination.

One thing I like about beer that I'm not sure if you get with wine is the creativity. Yes, there are beer kits, but after about 4 kits, I stopped using the kits and started using my own recipes. Maybe wines are the same, I haven't done the research there, but there are books and websites dedicated to beer recipes, and that only starts your imagination flowing, and from there, you can go anywhere and make **** that noone else has even thought of before. There's a bit of science, and a whole lot of art.

I've never been a huge fan of flavoured beers, except for a raspberry-geuze I tried at a small little brewery in Belgium. Most seem too sweet for my liking.

Me neither, but a proper Kriek (sour cherry) beer that is mulled with some spices (cinnamon, cloves, allspice) is a wonderful winter treat!

Many fruit beers that are available locally have been sweetened and/or artificially flavored (including the lime beer craze that will hopefully die soon), making them taste more like pop than beer. There are good fruit beers out there though that don't lose the beer qualities, while still including fruit flavors. We don't get many true lambics or gueuzes here, but Sherbrooke is carrying a number of Cantillon beers that have a number of fruit beers, but these are not for the faint of heart...they are very sour, so be prepared!

At the risk of exposing myself as the beer geek that I am (too late ), that leaves a lot of flavors still available. German Hefeweizens will have banana, clove, and bubblegum flavors from the yeast. Stouts and porters will have chocolate and coffee flavors from the dark malts. IPAs (real IPAs. not lagers that call themselves IPAs, like Alexander Keith's) will have a grapefruit flavor and bitterness from the hops. Bocks and doppelbocks will have toasty and dark fruit flavors from teh Munich and Vienna malts. Scotch ales will have a smokey or peaty flavor from the water and yeast. Belgian ales will have all sorts of fruity, spicy, floral, peppery aromas and flavors from the yeasts they use. When I make a flavored beer, I try and pair the underlying style with the flavors I want to add, and never add too much flavor to overwhelm so that the beer itself is still present and complementary. I love just about all styles of beers, except for macro lagers that think "cold" is a flavor, sexy women in commercials are a suitable replacement for flavor in beer (don't get me wrong, I like sexy women, but not at the expense of good beer ), and use rice and corn and watered down beer instead of barley in order to cut costs.

I wish we had some craft beer options at Eskimo games. Maybe some day, when I open up my own brewery, I'll brew a "Green And" Gold Ale, and strike up a marketing deal with the Esks

Cantillion was actually the brewery I was talking about. But judging from it's size I didn't think they had a distributor in Canada...good to know! The beer is most definitely different, on the tour they told us to forget what we know about beer and just taste it. I loved it!

That's awesome! Love the packaging as well. I'll have to go pick some up.

It might be a once only thing that they brought it in, but Sherbrooke has 9 varieties of Cantillon on their shelves right now (they brought in a 10th variety for beer of the month club members only), running between $25-30 per 750 mL bottle.
