    Canada Canadian Sport/Athletes

Thought I'd create this thread based on accomplishments of Canadian athletes, or minor level sporting events. Instead of creating individual threads for tennis, golf, soccer, basketball, etc.

Milos Raonic had another solid effort in the Italian Open this week in a semi-final loss to the eventual tournament champion, Novak Djokovic. He still remains ranked in the top 10 in the ATP Men's Tour. On the doubles side, Canadian Daniel Nestor and his Serbian teammate won the Men's Doubles trophy.

On the links, the resurgent Canadian Mike Weir regained his old ball striking and putting form finishing 2nd in the Byron Nelson Championship. Weir had the lead temporarily during the final round, when a two shot swing occurred with eventual winner Brendon Todd. Graham DeLeat also had a top 10 finish. Can't remember the last time there were 2 Canadians in the top 10 in the same PGA event, if ever.

And Canada's James Hinchcliffe will start from the second spot in next week's Indy 500 after narrowly missing the pole position time in qualifying.

Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has won her first WTA title today in Nuremburg. Not sure how many top seeded players were in the tournament, but this is a huge accomplishment either way. Good timing going into the French Open.

I'll be in NY during the US Open. It'd be awesome to watch her in person so I'm going to have to find a way to get tickets to do that.

    Maybe Raonic as well.

That is a bucket list sporting event for me. Flushing would be a great place to watch a match. Jealous.

    No kidding. That's awesome, boss.

If you're there for the early rounds you might get lucky as I doubt Raonic and Genie will be on the marquee courts at that point...so you might be able to just get a general admission pass and find them on one of the side courts.

Yeah, I'm there for the first week of action and since neither of them would be a big draw like the favorites are, it should work out well.

Canada's Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard both won their opening matches at Roland Garros early this morning.

Genie is off to the third round after a come from behind win this morning. Both Williams sisters and Li Na have been eliminated already. If ever the door were wide open for a surprise winner.......

The door is wide open now as Radwanska has been upset. Genie would have met her in the quarters assuming they got that far.

Both Canadians playing today at around 10am.

First serve of the match by Milos -- 222 km/h.
Wow. That is called setting the tone.

Is anyone else watching this match?
    Milos up a break 4-3 in the 5th. It's a nail biter!

ps How is he still serving at 213 km/h?

pps Eugenie won in straight sets.
The Grand Slams are exciting regardless, but moreso with Canadians, not only seeded, but also in meaningful matches.

Milos recovers with a break after losing his last service game at love. Serving for the match (again).

Have always wondered why he doesn't serve & volley more than he does

    Adendum: YEEAAHH!!! He did it

    Re: Canadian Sport/Athletes

    Wow, congrats to both.

Genie did not have her best stuff and is going to really have to step it up to have a chance at beating Kerber who has yet to drop a set.

Raonic has a decent chance at winning his next one and getting into the quarters where he would face either Tsonga or Djokovic.

Well she stepped it up alright. Straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 over Kerber.

    That's a dominating performance.

    Re: Canadian Sport/Athletes

Milos into the quarterfinals as well! Straight sets over Granollers (all 6-3).

1st time in the open era that a Canadian man has reached the French Open quarters.

Hopefully Djokovic & Tsonga go to 5 sets...though not looking good after the 1st set.

    Correction:
Greg Rusedski had already switched over to Great Britain when he made QFs at Wimbledon in 1997. Theregore, Milos is the 1st Canadian to make any QF draw in the open era.

No kidding. If she plays like that, she wins the whole thing. Great performance.

Two Canadians in the quarters. Amazing. Unfortunately it looks like Raonic is going to have to face the Joker.

Milos is due for a big top seed upset.

I don't know who is running things over at Tennis Canada, but they deserve some big time recognition for making Canada relevant in tennis. Think about that, Canada is somehow relevant in tennis. It's incredible. We have two people in the QFs at a major, the men went to the Davis Cup semi's and the women qualified for the Fed Cup.

What a match. She was down 5-2 in the first set and 4-1 in the third set but won them both!

    Sharapova up next.

Sharapova is 18-1 in the last 3 years at Roland Garros. She won in 2012 and lost the final last year to Serena.

    Tough task. Really tough task.

Milos bows out in straight sets to the Joker. He's right there it seems, and then he seems to get quite dejected after getting down, especially 2-0. Once he finds that extra gear and will to keep fighting he'll get through one of those top seeds. It's only a matter of time.

Still, a great showing on the big stage.

It's like heneeds a better coach. His serve is a cannon, but the rest of his game is flaky. More unforced errors than anyone I've ever seen.

Okay but he just lost in the Quarters to the world's best player. I wouldn't rag on him for that.

No, but he's not going to win one of those majors until he stops whacking the ball into the net or wide. He may have reached the quarters, but he came within a hair of losing to a player ranked #29 the round before.

There us still a lit to improve but he's actually really improved the rest of his game (ie other than serve) & his movement. The difference from last year's hardcourt season to now is very obvious. This was extra impressive given that clay is not his natural or preferred surface. I think the improvements are due to his coaching changes over the last year or so.

AND although he lost in straight sets, 1 was a tiebreak & the other 2 were essentially 1 service break each (traded in 3rd). That's pretty darn good vs Djokovic.

Genie is up a set, and tied 5-5 in the 2nd right now with Sharapova. Looking like this set could go to a tie break. Come on Genie!!!

Damn, Genie couldn't hold serve and lets the set slip away. I liked her chances in a tie break. Now in a third set, who knows. Sharapova has been dominant in them.
