    Curling
All-Alberta final at the Brier (yay!). I missed that 3-4 game, Devin Herouxís tweeting makes up for it. Just read thru his tweets now & feel like I watched!
Who do you guys want? Iím cheering for Bottcher....though truly itís win-win whoever wins. The menís world organizers in Lethbridge must be SO happy!

    Tennis
BNP Paribas aka Indian Wells aka the unofficial 5th Grand Slam started a few days ago. The Canadians are doing really well. Milos & Felix won their matches yesterday & are into the 3rd round - Felix won in straight sets over Tsitsipas which is no small feat! If Shapo wins his match today, heíll be in the 3rd round, too.

On the womanís side, Andreescu has her 3rd round natch today. 2019 has been a huge breakout year for already, so early in the season.

I’m cheering for Bottcher for sure. He managed the last few ends of the game like a master and that last shot to win it was awesome. Looking forward to the game tonight!

Brendan's draw to force in the tenth is three feet too heavy and it costs him a potential Brier victory. He will be back. Great effort.

Final weekend of the BNP Paribas Open aka Indian Wells aka unofficial 5th Grand Slam...

Bianca Andreescu is playing in the women’s final today vs Angelique Kerbers of Germany. I think she’s the 1st wild card to ever make the Indian Wells final.

Milos is playing in the men’s semi-final today vs Dominic Thiem of Austria. To me, Thiem is a more complete player, while Milos relies more on the power game. Should be a good match.

Aside (because this is the Canada thread, I know, I know): Roger vs Rafa in the other semi.

What a great day of tennis! Next year I hope to be live posting

Addendum: Rafa withdrew because of his persistent knee issues. He’s being smart, but sad he won’t be playing today.

Addendum #2: Both finals are tomorrow (Sunday). Unfortunately Milos lost in 3 sets; Feds-Thiem will be good though I think Feds has the advantage for multiple reasons.

So what happened at the end of the Bears Sask hockey game today? I could not watch the 3rd period and the bears scored 3 times to win but there were all sorts of penalties against sask late in the game for fighting and such hand not much for alberta. Goon show once they lost?

I couldn't watch the game as I no longer pay for broadcast TV and the only place it was available was Sportsnet. I saw the list of penalties on the USports box score and had the same question as you. I also made the same assumption, having watched the Golden Bears/Huskies matchup over many years. It seems to be in the U of S hockey culture.

That win puts the Bears into tonight's championship game against UNB as they look to repeat as national champions. Should be a good game. Go Bears Go!

Toronto, Canada – The Board of Directors of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) has made the decision to discontinue operations effective May 1, 2019. Unfortunately, while the on-ice hockey is exceptional, the business model has proven to be economically unsustainable.

New management, led by Jayna Hefford, and the new Board, put in place in Summer & Fall 2018 respectively, have proactively worked with our contract staff, players, GM’s, industry partners and corporate sponsors to establish an adequate revenue base, good governance, and high-quality hockey on the ice. Unfortunately the business model that has been the foundation of the League is not sustainable financially.

Founded in 2007 by players and members of the community, the League’s mandate was to grow the sport of women’s hockey, and to that extent it more than achieved its goal.

Last week 175,000 fans tuned in to watch the 12th edition of the Clarkson Cup, a new record for viewership, and the game delivered. Women’s hockey is fast, skilled, and generally high scoring, making for excellent entertainment.

We thank our fans for cheering on their favourite player and favourite teams, our sponsors for helping fund the growth of women’s hockey, and our partnerships with the NHLPA, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Calgary Flames. We would like to acknowledge the management and players of Team KRS for their commitment to the CWHL and growth of women’s hockey in China, and Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, Hockey Canada, and the NHL for their support.

The contract staff, contractors, coaches, and athletes of the CWHL are an inspiration to women around the world, and under Jayna Hefford’s leadership this season we have seen a new levels of success, new energy and credibility to the game.

Well, this is great news. Certainly one league makes much more sense when you are trying to establish the sport on a professional level.

Canadian Corey Conners won the Valero Texas Open yesterday! What a win for the young man. He had to win a 6 person qualification round on Monday to even enter the tournament, and now after winning, he gets to play in the Masters this week in Augusta.

    Amazing accomplishment.

Former Edmonton track coach Ken Porter fired from Ottawa club after sex abuse investigations

Longtime coach Ken Porter was fired this morning from the Ottawa track and field club he helped form 30 years ago in the wake of sex abuse allegations from at least nine former teen athletes, including several from B.C.

The Ottawa Lions Club announced this morning that it was permanently cutting ties with Porter, after suspending him a month ago. Postmedia has published a series of stories detailing alleged abuse of male teen track stars with the Edmonton Olympic Club in the 1970s, as well as in Ottawa.

“Subsequent to recent media reports over the last two weeks, the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club has received complaints from its membership of sexual harassment allegations against Ken Porter,” says the unsigned statement released Monday morning by the club.

“Ken Porter is in violation of the Club’s Statement of Expectations as well as the Athletics Canada and Athletics Ontario Code of Conduct and Ethics Policies … Porter’s affiliation with the Club has been permanently severed as result of the aforementioned violation of the Club’s By-laws and Statement of Expectations, this will include expulsion of Dr. Porter from having any future affiliation with the Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club.”

Postmedia has not been able to reach Porter Monday.

    Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Rafa Nadal.
Madrid Open. Tomorrow. (One of the biggest clay court tournaments pre-French Open)
    1st time meeting.

Felix beat his bestie Shapovalov in the last round.

Personally, I think Felix is the heir to the Canadian throne, though Shapo will do well.

Never seen an ending like that, the ball seemed like it bounced 15 times on the rim before dropping.

Just a reminder that the Women's soccer, Canada vs Mexico friendly from BMO is about to start on TSN2. Christine Sinclair needs four more goals to become the all-time leading scorer.

I hope everyone is watching this Raptors game.

Raptors went from down by 15 at the end of the 3rd quarter to now up by 5 with 2 min left in the game.

Kawhi is amazing. Loved him in San Antonio, but he’s even better now!

    RAPTORS!!!!!!!

    NBA finalists!!!

This is pretty huge for basketball in Canada

    Add:
Thought basketball had the same superstition as other sports about touching the conference trophy. Apparently not.

    Add#2:
For all his fantabulous-ness on the court, the best part about Kawhi is how he always acts like he’s been there before. (He literally has been, but still!)

    Re: Canadian Sport/Athletes

I know you’ve all been waiting for my tennis update

The French Open starts today. It’s the only clay court Grand Slam. There are always surprises because clay plays so differently than grass & hardcourt - and sliding is important. (Watch a Rafael Nadal match to see a true master on clay.)

    The Canadians:

    Men:
    Milos
(current ATP rank 17 but will likely fall a couple spots when updated tmrw) - withdrew from the French last week due to knee injury

Shapo (today is 23, but will probably be 24 or 25 with Monday update) - He did not have a very good clay season, therefore the drop(s) in ranking. He is the only Canadian hope on the men’s side now.

    Felix - (today’s rank 28 but will be #22 tmrw) -
    Good:
He just made the finals of the clay tournament in Lyon, his 2nd ATP final of his young career. (He’s really still in his 1st full year on the ATP men’s tour.)
    Bad:
He aggravated a groin injury during said final in the 1st set but didn’t want to withdraw because he didn’t want to ruin the win for his competitor or ruin the experience for the fans.
Note: Lots of comments out there saying he didn’t put in a good effort, which is false. He couldn’t run properly & really ought to have been selfish/all about self-preservation.
    Ugly:
He officially withdrew from the French Open this morning prior to the first tournament match due to said groin injury. Poor guy.
He actually learned on clay & is comfortable on clay, which is very different than most North American players, so it’s too bad for him that his French Open debut is delayed at least a year.

    Women:
    Bianca Andreescu
(WTA rank 22) - She burst onto the scene with a major bang this year, defeating several top players in various tournaments & then winning Indian Wells aka the 5th Grand Slam. These were all hardcourt tournaments, though. After Indian Wells, she aggravated a shoulder injury at the Miami Open the next week & hasn’t played in a tournament since. She’s ranked 22 for the French, so we’ll see how she does.

    Addendum
    Oopsies I forgot about Genie.
Currently WTA ranked 77. She plays on Tuesday in her 1st round match.

The 3 Canadians are out at the French Open. Andreescu won her 1st round match, but had to withdraw due to shoulder.

One Canadian left in mixed doubles. They won their 1st round match. I can’t remember her name! (Dabrowski?)

It's amazing to me how little respect the Raptors get from American basketball media. Was listening in to the post-game show on Satellite radio, and the condescension to Toronto, the Raptors team, was just ridiculous. Statements like, "We get it, it's your first time in the finals..." and, "If Durant comes back by game 6, Golden State will win the series".

I know that it's only one game into the series, but with Toronto's back-court defence, it's clear that they've given themselves a chance at least.

Who's got 2 thumbs and is holding a ticket from the Flamingo with the raptors to win it all at 11-1? This guy!
They need to win game 2 if they do they'll have real confidence they can hang with golden state and beat them.
