    History Esks: By The Numbers

We tried doing this a few years ago, but instead of telling everyone who *I* think the best player for each Jersey Number on the Esks, why not tell us what YOU think?
Every two weeks we'll post a new set of numbers, and everyone can enter in their favourites to wear the numbers listed. Don't see your favorite player on the list? Write 'em in!

    Follow This Link

Just a note: We didn't include players for multiple numbers; instead tried to put them down for the number that they're most famous for playing in. Jackie Parker? He's going to be listed under #91, not 12. Rollie Miles? Got him under 98 instead of 18, etc.

Hope everyone has fun with this. Prizes are being organized now, and will be sent out at the end of the season and we should have some fun ones.

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Mike & Andrew from This Day In Esks History, and the Eskimo Empire Podcast.

    Re: Esks: By The Numbers

    Thanks, @cmbuk -- appreciate it!

Strange about Downtown Eddie Brown. I just tested it out, and it allowed me to vote for him...? Sorry about that -- not sure what happened!

Some numbers will be a breeze for people to choose. Others may be tough because they'll agonize between two players, and others they just don't really have one that stands out so they could pick anyone.
Getting a great response already via the links we posted on Twitter and Facebook already, and should be fun to see how many enjoy it. If we end up getting a lot of responses, we'll just have to do multiple prizes given out at the end, so your chances of winning increase!

    Cheers!

Good stuff man! And for me it was only a quick agonizing second on #4. Loved Downtown Eddie Brown but I think Adarius is better. Although nothing will beat the shoe top catch he made in the '96 Grey Cup!

    Awesome work, Mike, and Andrew.

Voted and like a few, had trouble with #4, but ultimately went with Adarius.

Thanks for the feedback, SecN - it's strange, we have received votes for Downtown Eddie Brown, so I'm not sure why some people are unable to vote for him (or anyone else for that matter). Has any other number given anyone any troubles?

    Re: Esks: By The Numbers

The response for the "Esks: By The Numbers" has been outstanding so far; far more than I had even hoped. Thanks to everyone who has participated! I even see some of the older players from the 70s and 80s getting votes, so more of the "Grey Beards" are clicking their votes - will be interesting to see later groups of numbers when 50s and 60s players are in the mix!

2 more days left until this round closes -- we'll shut it off at 7 PM on Sunday night -- and the next round will open up on Tuesday after we record the next podcast on Monday night. With the overwhelming response we've gotten, we'll be drawing a name for another prize this week on the Periscope (Twitter video) between 8:00 and 8:30 PM on Monday.

Thanks again to everyone who has joined in the fun so far! If you haven't, come on in and play along.

I'll be honest....I really considered writing in Sean Fleming for #3, but I figured he's already a shoe in for 11.
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

    Good guess.

Fleming spent far more of his career wearing 11 than 3, so he was put there.

This one wraps up tomorrow and you can see #11 and all the rest from 10-19 on Tuesday!

This thread a super idea. Making me feel insecure though, as I (ashamedly) do not recall all the names posted.

    Re: Esks: By The Numbers

A few years back, there was a thread (started by OK14 I believe) where we counted down by best (posted by anyone here) player numbers to training camp (13 days Highbaugh, 12 days Wilikinson, and so forth). At that time I had found on line a complete listing of all Esk players, which indicated the number worn by each player. But, having used aluminum cookware for many years, I can no longer recall that site. Anyone know which web site(s) that might be? Thank you.

I would say that if you don't recall the players by name or year/jersey number, perhaps they didn't make and impression on you, and vote for the people you DO remember. Some players can be found in Wikipedia or by googling if you want to refresh your memory on things....?

The Esks have a pretty decent page, but there are some omissions and errors, it's a pretty decent list:

Just a reminder that the first round of voting ends today at 7 PM Edmonton time, and round 2 (Jersey #s 10-19) will begin on Tuesday. We will be drawing a name based on who voted in round 1 for a prize on tomorrow's Periscope and the winner will be announced afterwards on the various social media channels and here.

Thanks again for the tremendous response! Seems like people are having a lot of fun with it!

I think Ted stopped updating his list in 2012.

    Re: Esks: By The Numbers

Round 1 was a massive success with a great amount of people participating -- thanks to everyone who gave us their opinions!

Round 2 is now ready to go -- this is for jersey numbers 10-19:
    https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VKZFXR8

Just a note; a lot of the 50s era team won't be listed here, as they will be listed by the numbers they wore the most -- Jackie Parker will be at 91, Rollie Miles at 98 and Normie Kwong at 95, for example. You could always write them in if you don't care for the choices at 12, 18 and 15 (respectively) of course, but we definitely didn't ignore them.

Results of round 1 come out on the Podcast tomorrow, and will be posted here as well.

    Cheers, and thanks again!

Round 2 certainly has it's tough choices. Lots of old school fans will be battling with #13. I'll be curious to see the vote distribution on #19 as well.
Having fun - can't wait to hear the results of round #1 with this week's podcast.
