Attention What is next at linebacker?

So what is our next move at linebacker?

We have now lost 2 starting (both presumably with a pretty hefty salary) linebackers.

Konar and Ladler looked solid last night, but we are getting a little thin and in the second half you could see the difference without a reliable run stopper in the middle.

    Do we

    A - Next man up (Jones, Bullitt,etc.)
B - Try and hold the fort until NFL starts letting guys go
C - Recycle free agent (Greg Jones, etc)
D - Cash in some trade chips (Franklin, extra receivers, Behar, etc.)

    - - - Updated - - -

I think I read that Greg Jones asked for his release form Saskatchewan for family reasons. Do we know what those were? Is it something that might have changed by now?

I could see us resigning one of the recent cuts, someone like Kose maybe? Was one of the last cuts.

I was thinking along the same lines. Kose was suspended at one point in training camp, never saw a reason why. Had some thoughts of Winston Venable, but I seem to recall he was a WIL in Mtl. Let's hope Sunderland has someone on his radar already.

And future teams like Calgary are definitely going to take advantage of that. Good thing we have Alouettes next.

Kose is still on the suspended list

Yeah, as mentioned I'd bring a guy like Kose back and give Bullit a couple games platooning with Jones and see what we've got there before rushing out to grab any CFL vets.

Don't think so, pretty sure they released him, doesn't show up on the roster anywhere

Mulumba was Middle LB at Maine and with his Multiple awards and this Highlight video he could in my opinion step into Jc's shoes. I know with a Rook its better to ease him in but there is a time to see a trial by fire.

Run the Ball up the gut around the horn it does not matter. We run we win what is so difficult to understand.

I expect them to go one more game with Jones, and if the middle is open as much as it was when JC went down they'll bring in a vet.

though it woudn't shock me to see them already looking.. not a lot of exp in the LB corps...

Looks like we drafted a good one for sure in taking him. I think we will look for someone with experience, they won't trust a rookie with that starting spot. Down the road he could be our future there.

Which is really too bad. Guy was a real monster of a hitter, but his passion was more public speaking than playing - which is totally awesome IMO.

That was the first guy I wondered about.

Is there anyone out there with RedBlacks ties looking for a place?

Damaso Munoz led the Redblacks in tackles last year. Not sure what his situation is (he is mentioned as retired), or if he would even be a fit.

He was dreadful when he was here a few years ago.

He was second in tackles for the Esks in both 2012 (behind Sherritt) and 2013 (behind TJ Hill). Curious what (in your opinion) made him "dreadful"?

Made his living chasing tackles down from behind, often into the secondary. MLB needs to be a thumper, making tackles at or near LofS.

Thanks - that does sound familiar now that you've mentioned it.

I thought Jones shook off some rust and did a better job in coverage than JC, is it just wishful thinking on my part?

Jones looked pretty good to me, seemed to be in the right spot to break up some plays... but let's see what happens after a team has some film on him.

A tad worried about our run D without JC. We gave up 92 yards on 14 carries or a 6.6 yard per carry average, all without a lengthy run (16 yards was the longest).

True, that's a full yard over Jeremiah Johnson's CFL career average. Maybe Jones will benefit from a full week of practice as a starter.

Also curious to see how Bullitt looks in rotation as well. The job is there for the taking, someone just has to grab it.

Me too, he's a solid athletic looking MLB and Mass seemed to have some good things to say about him in camp. We're gonna be hard pressed to replace JC's football IQ though.

Jones has had to spend his entire CFL career behind Sherritt and Eliminam. Pretty tough to unseat all star caliber players like those. Maybe Jones is really good but just has never got that chance to get on the field and show it. (Remember that Sherritt was a nothing but a special teamer at one time as well.)

Was also in Sask last year and couldn't crack the LB core. I'm of the opinion that Jones will do in a pinch but is not going to be the starter heading into playoffs. I would assume he's ahead of Bullitt, at this point, as he is familiar with the league and has earned his special teams stripes.

McCoil although not a MLB is a fifth string safety for the chargers right now. If Brock knows anyone in the Chargers organization I hope he's calling them.
