What Does This Team Need? Stay or GO?

I also wonder two things in regards to these recent signing...

1. How much influence SM has with the roster decisions? I would assume that with his resume he came to the EE with the idea that he would be involved in roster management with GM BS...

2. How much FA players (especially on the offensive side of the ball) are attracted to play for SM. Very well respected and the closest thing in the CFL in regards to NFL ties and experience south of the boarder...

To speak to the first, I'm thinking Scott Milanovich is probably heavily involved and likely Noel Thorpe too. I remember the coverage of Brock Sunderland's first free agency here when they brought in guys like Larry Dean, Don Unamba, and Jovan Santos-Knox and the talk of how Phillip Lolley gave a report on the guys he wanted and shaped the plan. It's likely been a similar process where the coaches have been able to have significant input, especially without the need to game plan much of the past year.

On the second point, you're bang on. I'm sure there's a lot of interest in playing for someone with his credentials.

If SM doesn't have significant sway in these decisions then he and BS will not have a sustainable working relationship. Bob Ackles always said player personnel decisions are coaching decisions.

More minor transactions. Ceresna has re-structured his contract it seems.

Chris Kelly back and should keep consistency on the O-Line.

Surprised to see them re-sign Parker (hurt all last year) and Elliot (didn't play much last year). Must be coming at minimum salaries as vets in positions we already have depth at doesn't seem like a big need for us. Milanovich would know Elliot I think from his rookie year with the Argonauts.
Don't have the average age by team in front of me, but Esks have to be among the oldest.

James Tuck is a good one to return. Special Team ace.

Vets coming off a year off. Training Camp will tell if that healed the body or accelerated retirement. Either way gets a guy excited for camp.....

Esks currently have 24 players on their roster 30 and over, tops in the league. Calgary and BC in comparison have 8 and 9 respectively.

I think SM prefers vet players. The 2012 GC Champs that he coached was an older squad in TO wasn't it? Flemons, Belli etc on the DL quickly come to mind.

With the high rate of turnover in the CFL these days, it's not a bad strategy to go with more vets. It's not as hard as it once was to be able to fill roster spots over time.
