I thought it ridiculous this morning, but Elkhound is actually growing on me. That northern Huskie vibe fits with some of the previous marketing and you can probably build on hounds as a brand identity. Edit: Of course, they’re shown online as a comparable breed to Eskimos, which are also clearly a dog breed and should be just as valid a name.

Are they being freaking serious with those names? I never for a second expected to fall in love with any of the names because I am so used to the Eskimos but those are the top 7!! I don't want my football team named after a freaking tree. Evergolds is stupid. Eclipse and the Elements don't inspire anything. I can't believe they would even allow the Eagles. There is a famous football team in the US, why the hell would you want to name yourself the same name. Plus I have to think the Philly Eagles will raise a stink.

Honestly I'll really be surprised if it turns out to be anything but Elk(s). I actually voted for Golden Eagles but it appears that shortening it to Eagles has turned a lot of people off of the name (as intimated in the 3down piece) and putting my tin foil hat on for a second I can't help but wonder if that may have been intentional to make the Elks option look better. Golden Eagles or nothing for me. I don't like the Elk name at all.
But I think they should leave it as Edmonton Football Club. Like that one more than any of the names that are out there.

I'd love to see a pair of teams playing a game with those early Canadian rules. It would be interesting, as it's somewhere between modern rules and British rugby. No forward passing, no specialist positions. You had 14 men a side, with two men whose job it was to "Prop" up the center, who heeled the ball back to the quarterback instead of snapping it with his hands. I'm not sure I'd want it all the time, but it would be an interesting one-off experience.

Very popular in Australia and somewhat in Britain (the Toronto Wolfpack played this form), but it is NOT the rugby union that plays the Rugby World Cup and is what most of us think of as "rugby".

I'm not convinced the Aussie NRL or the British Super League are available on TV legally here any more, except for the odd game on Sportsnet World, but loads of highlights and even full games are on YouTube etc. Out of the three "footballs" I picked up watching from Australia (union, league and Aussie rules), my wife likes it the best because it's closest to our football and usually higher-scoring than union.

Back then it was 3 downs for 10 yards, but of course no forward passing, no downfield blocking, no blocking on returns, etc. The ball did have to be "downed" after a Try (we won a few games when an opposing player crossed the goal line and just dropped the ball or ran into touch without downing the ball first), and several other rules that evolved from Rugby League rules. League started in the 1890s and many Brits that immigrated here would have brought the new rules with them. They got changed based on what local teams preferred, so you would find the rules different in Alberta than you did in Ontario for sure, who were using the Burnside Rules after 1903. Many thought our rules were more "wide open" here, and of course we used more American players than they did out East due to the disparity in population.

An interesting rule back in the pre-WWI days is that there was a "residency rule" in place in Alberta that players had to have lived in the city they played for, for at least 1 year to be eligible. So you couldn't just import players from neighbouring towns or provinces to come play for you.
