Re: What's in the DVD player?

Well, let's see here, what might I end up watching:

Fear & Loathing in Vegas ("We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...")

Blues Brothers ("We're on a mission from God")

The Big Lebowski ("**** it, Dude, let's go bowling.")

    Monty Python
    - Meaning of Life ("I'm afraid I have no choice but to sell you all for scientific experiments.")
    - Live at the Hollywood Bowl ("Seagull sickle... Pelican bon-bon... ALBATROSS.")
    - Holy Grail ("I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.")

The Untouchables ("You just fulfilled the first rule of law enforcement: make sure when your shift is over you go home alive. Here endeth the lesson.")

MASH 1970 ("Colonel, fair's fair... if I punch Hawkeye and nail Hot-Lips, can I go home too?")

Animal House ("Now, she should be good-looking, but we're willing to trade looks for a certain... morally casual attitude.")

Manchurian Candidate (recent one with Denzel)... not bad... but I'm a Jonathon Demme fan after all!

I just saw War of the Worlds the other day. I know a lot of people have been critical of it, but I have no problem admitting I really enjoyed it.

can you compare it to the original?

no, scratch that. It's from a different time and would be like comparing apples to oranges.

I saw the original on TV when I was a kid (yes folks, long before VCRs!). Was too scared to watch the whole thing through. When I was a bit older I was able to watch - but only from the safety of behind the couch! When I finally did watch the whole thing it was on late at night. As I went to be I looked out the window and saw a red light in the distance! Freaked out! until I remembered that was a light on top of a building! Still, because of all that whenever I hear the sound of the Alien machines from that original movie it sends shivers down my spine!

    Hard to believe...
    a) that WofW was made in '53!! Quite amazing to do what they did and get things to look the way they did considering the technology of the day.
    b) that Ray Harryhausen (stop action animator from KK) is still alive! Alway had a huge soft spot for his work. I mean what would a fur bikini-clad Raquel Welch be running away from in One Million BC otherwise?
(note to self... get DVD of One Million BC)
(another note to self... get DVD of Fantastic Voyage - also with RW)

Right now in my DVD is "Spaceballs".

I saw it on sale at Zellers last week for $8.00 and I couldn't resist. Damn funny movie.
I used to watch it all the time when it came out.
My wife hadn't seen it before, and she laughed when she saw it. (Not as much as I did however...)

Picked up WOTW today. Now that I've read that, I'm going to have to get someone to come watch it with me. I hate things jumping out at me in movies LOL Yes I'm a fraidy cat.
On second thought maybe I will just rewatch "The longest yard", I still need to see the original. Yup that's my plan. Then watch "the replacements"

Mr. and Mrs. Smith was in there a couple nights ago. I was impressed. Excellent script, although hardly realistic.

War of the Worlds will be a huge let down to whoever has seen the original. The sound the the aliens communicating in the '53 version was downright creepy. They replaced it with an airhorn. I laughed my ass off the first time I heard the BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! Crummy crummy waste of time.

And for the real WotW fanatics see if you can dredge up the Album by Justin Hayward and John Lodge (of the Moody Blues)... campy, cheesy, dramatic-musical album... with some surprisingly interesting stuff on there! (I have it on LP... dunno if it ever made it to CD... off to allmusic.com I go!)
